Last August members of our Club took part in a 100,000 meal packing event organised by the Rotary Club of Warrington. These meals were heading to Kenya to help in the STOP HUNGER NOW (now RISE AGAINST HUNGER) program where children receive meals at school to improve both health and education. In late January these meals arrived along with Rotarians Irene and Eric Russell.

August was a busy month despite it being the month that we don’t traditionally meet.  On 13th of August 10 Trailblazers and friends went to help Warrington Rotary with the Stop Hunger Now project to pack 100,000 meals for the world’s hungry.  It was attended by myself, husband Philip and daughter Laura, Hazel Walton-Carr, Martin Judd and girlfriend Nicole, Ria Delves, Ipsy Mukhergee, Maggie Stanway and her 11 year old granddaughter Halle.  Funds of £550 were raised by the group to pay for the food packed. We all felt that it was an enjoyable and worthwhile event and also felt that we could have continue to pack on the production line for longer. The volunteers then enjoyed a frugal lunch back at our house. For those who missed the meal pack, there are plans afoot for another during the RIBI Conference in Manchester in April 2017.

On the 20th August the Annual Summer Barbeque was hosted by Peter Senior and John Doyle.  As always, Peter’s food was excellent and the Trailblazers and friends had a great time.  Could anyone with photos please post to the Good Times photo album or email to me.

The 1st meeting in September was scheduled to be a catch up with Amy Hincks of the Booth Centre (who work with the homeless of Manchester) to present the funds raised at the Bollywood Night.  Unfortunately she was unable to attend due to illness.  She has suggested that we might like to visit the Booth Centre to present the cheque.  If this can be arranged, we would be able to see how the funds will be spent first hand and may also have a volunteering opportunity on the day.  I’ll keep you posted

NOW FOR SOME INPORTANT DATES

CLUB VISIONING on 15/09/2016
Your club needs you.  This is our chance to have the club that we all want.  To be meaningful we need everyone to attend and give their views about venues, meals, meeting content, events, fundraisers… you name it!  The results of the visioning will form the strategic plan for the next three years – so be there to make your wishes known.  Martin, Ria and I have previously attended a visioning session at Stockport Lamplighters and it is a surprising and innovative format, so it should also be a lot of fun too.  The report back will be on 20/10/2016

LIVE MUSIC NOW on 23/09/2016

Trailblazers have been asked to support this event.  Details to follow.

Live music now is a UK-wide initiative, created by Yehudi Menuhin and Ian Stoutzker in 1977.  Every year the musicians deliver thousands to interactive music progammes in care homes, hospitals and special schools, where music can make a huge difference to lives.

CHARTER NIGHT ON FRIDAY 07/10/2016

Please sign up for this important club event as a matter of urgency.  A number of people have said they are coming but have not formally signed up/ paid.  We have a deadline of 23/09/2016 to notify numbers to the hotel.

This should be a fantastic event with an interesting talk by Sir William McAlpine, a good meal, wine and Prosecco included and even a disco!

CONFERENCES

The district conference is in Llandudno from Friday 28/10/2016 to 30/10/2016 - details on the district website.  So far I am aware of the following members and friends attending:- Harold and Sheila Bolter, Hazel Walton-Carr, myself and Martin Judd and Nichole.

The RIBI conference is in Manchester from 07/04/2016 to 09/04/2016.  This will be a great opportunity to raise the profile of Manchester Trailblazers and Rotary within our city.  So there will be lots more about this in due course.

On Friday 8th July 2016, seen Manchester Trailblazers Rotary Club held their first ever Bollywood fundraising charity night to raise money for The Booth Centre and Rotary Foundation. Over eighty people attended, many dressing in traditional Bollywood style and enjoyed the superb food served by Sai Spice, and the very beautiful and talented Bollywood and belly dancers, and the wonderful mandolin music from Suresh Khan.

On the evening a total of £1,272 was raised which will be split between both the Booth Centre and Rotary Foundation.

Many thanks to all who supported the evening.

The Booth Centre is a local Manchester charity that aims to bring about positive change in the lives of people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, and help them plan for and realise a better future.

They do this by providing advice to find accommodation, education, training and help to secure employment, free healthy meals, support in tackling issues with health and addiction, and creative activities to boost confidence and self esteem.

Throughout India and around the world, Rotary clubs are celebrating a major milestone: India has gone three years without a new case of polio. The last reported case was a two-year-old girl in West Bengal on 13 January 2011. To mark this historic triumph, Rotary clubs illuminated landmarks and iconic structures throughout the country with four simple but powerful words, "India is polio free."

What is it like taking a large team to Africa?  It has probably been one of the most rewarding experiences in my life. In mid February, I began leading Rotary members from all over the East Coast of the United States through Ghana. I’ve tried to give the team a warm Ghanaian welcome like I’ve received on my earlier trips. A large trip is a real blessing because each person sees Ghana and our work in a different way.
